I just wanted y'all to know, I'm here.... and I'm great! Stay tuned for my first real post, after almost a year, in the next couple of days.

Thanks so much my lovelies for all your support and cries for DESIGNISTA posts. I love you, and though it seemed like I was ignoring you, I so appreciate the love and constant support. It's so nice to hear that I made a difference in your lives, even if for a minute or two a couple times a week :)

Looking forward to doing it some more. Nothin' like a lil' Amy Davis energy, creativity, and let's face it, some craziness added to your morning blog surfing!

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Hello my friends! I know I have been absent for a very long time. I have dearly missed you, missed the writing, and missed the creative outlet this blog provides for me. Time management has been a key ingredient missing from my life since starting my job in July. And this past month with Halloween, countless personal and professional events I have attended, and an extraordinary work load, my exhaustion has been severe. But I think I have things figured out (we'll see what that means...yes, I know, you have heard me say that before)

On that note, let's start off with some Thanksgiving fun! My sister and her fiance are hosting Thanksgiving dinner at their home, and I (of course - I begged) am providing the centerpiece. Not sure what the linens and tableware look like, so this is a massive undertaking for me- playing design-by-ear, but I will persevere and hopefully it will turn out marvelously!

I love to do centerpieces that are unusual and unexpected- i.e. not using the typical color palette, or florals for a holiday centerpiece. I was at Pier One Imports last night, and saw these empty wine/ olive oil bottles and the flood gates opened to some out-of-the-box ideas....

Going to line these in a straight line down the center of the table with long tapered white candlesticks placed in the opening of the bottle. Thinking about filling the bottles with something colorful, but not sure yet, with smaller vases/ votives at the base of the bottles. Flowers will be placed in and around the bottle necks..... Still in the planning mode.

On my walk home, I remembered this image I had pulled years ago. Very similar to what I have planned.

We'll see how it turns out....... Now - Off to the Union Square farmers market to get the goods!

A Very Special NY Reunion- Thank You Facebook!

Olga came to my high school for one year in 1994 from Colombia (the country- everyone keeps asking me if I mean the university!) We became great friends. However, in the era of"no email" I lost contact with her. Thankfully, a few months ago, she found me on Facebook. This last week, she stopped into NY to meet her boyfriend from Germany. They, too, had started a relationship via email on Facebook (though they had met a few times before.) It was wonderful getting to see her again, like a day had never passed. That's when you know you are truly friends. Thank you Facebook for bringing us back together and bringing Stephan and Olga together! Hooray for email and social networking sites !!! :)

Attention- Amy Davis Designs is finally open for business (on the side of course!) My lovely friends have hired me to revamp their mid-town apartment and I am thrilled to pieces! I worked for a big-time designer in LA, but never got to do a job completely on my own- mostly due to a difficult work schedule. Well, here we go....... I am meeting with them this week to get the job moving. Looking forward to cataloging the entire design process on The Designista. It's a budget job -my friend just switched careers from practicing law and is going back to her advertising roots. Let creativity prevail!

Halloween Decor Galore: Finished Product

For the Halloween decor this year, I was completely inspired by the Pottery Barn Glitter skulls I posted about earlier this month. However, we refused to pay $20 for a tiny little skull. Plus they are super easy to do. Just glue and glitter. Thankfully, we found some at Michael's Craft Store (which I will post about tomorrow- the "how to" of this Halloween segment.) Skulls became our underlying theme, as they were everywhere, but did it in a totally chic fashion.

Jeannie's house already had an orange and black theme, so we decided to stay in that color scheme. Paired with the black fluorescent light, which gave it the eerie "Nightmare before Christmas" tone, and the orange incandescent bulbs which added the romance to the ambiance, the space was completely transformed. It was so pretty and fun to do- especially on a budget. I love big creative endeavors like this.

This was the table you saw when you walked in. At two in the morning, it looked bare, so I ran outside and gathered fallen leaves to add to the mix. Like a graveyard.... A stylish one at that!

We used the black roses and white branches (Christmas decor was already in the stores) so the branches would glow in the black light.

Unfortunately my camera doesn't focus in the dark. But at least this gives the idea of a lounge-like set up we were trying to create.

I loved the crow, and would have put them everywhere, but only one made it in the shopping cart. The lone bird. The skull and bust was also a fabulous addition- 75% off for $6!!!

This was taken the night before, prior to the installation of colored light bulbs. I made all of her frames crooked for a haunted/ abandoned house look. I actually realized this because I knocked off one of the frames and then went on a rampage shifting all of them. I then added the pipe cleaner spiders to the walls and frames. Actually looked great! And the pipe cleaners were only $2.

Orange bulbs- a great addition. I completely recommend changing the lighting for events.

See the wine glass on the right? Filled with spider rings..... by the end of the night, everyone was wearing them! For parties, I always recommend giving away something, in addition to food and drinks. In this case, we did prizes for costumes, glow sticks, glow bracelets. It is low budget, but adds an interactive element, which is a lot of fun.... like party favors, or wedding favors.

Jeannie was obsessed with doing masquerade masks. I was terrible at them, but they looked amazing in the lights.

All in all, it was so much fun. Planning parties is literally one of my favorite things to do. More posts to follow tomorrow, regarding the planning process. Hope you like what you saw!

Costume's Galore: Part 1

So Halloween was so much fun!!!!! Hope yours was too! So many amazing costumes (more pics to follow this posting- still waiting for additional pics from friends)....great punch (champagne, pomegranate juice, chambord, vodka, and ice skulls), good food, wonderful friends (though many were missing, due to other plans), and a lot of dancing (you'll see some of me down below!) I'll be doing several posts about Halloween; set up, decor, more costumes- so stay tuned. I just wanted to get a few up for people!

The infamous Davis Sisters!!!! By the end of the night, stranger were taking pictures with Jeannie. Peg Bundy is a big hit in Queens!

Originally I posted that i would be wearing fishnets. However, my hand went through them as I was pulling them up. Thank goodness there was a Rite Aid walking distance away, or we would have had a slight problem considering the length of these shorts!

Dream Costume: Pin Up Girl (on a budget)

First things first- what are you going to be for Halloween? I have dreamt about being a pin up girl since I can remember. I think the women portrayed in the images are so beautiful, they are sexy in an innocent way, and I love their figures. So for this Halloween, I decided to act on my dream and become one! I love making my costumes, but they can become costly. Instead of going out and buying a bunch of things I knew I wouldn't wear, I raided my closet to see if there was anything that could accomodate this look. And you know what, that would go for any costume. If you are still trying to find your finishing touches on your on super sassy creation, look first to what you already own. Start with one key piece and that will get you on a roll.

These American Apparel shorts caught my eye when I was walking down 16th street. They were featured in the window in red satin. I knew I had found my key piece (that is not me by the way!) But the question was what else was I going to add to it. I knew I had to wear stockings of some sort, but what about the shirt. Something strapless? Corset? Halter? Off the sholder? I searched high and low, and then remembered this shirt in my closet.

With the wide black patent belt and the gigham shirt from H&M that I bought for my 28th birthday outfit........ A perfect little pin up ensemble I must say!

What in the world was I going to do with my hair????? I looked all over the internet for images that could portray this look, and alot of them are variations on how I already do my hair, with curls and pulled up. I wanted to do something really out of the ordinary, and chose this boufant style with a sash pulled up around my head. Cute right? I had to do a practice run, of course. Just like when I was young and used to sit in front of the mirror practicing hair and makeup! :)

Fishnet stocking are essential to this costume. Not only are the shorts super short, but it will be cold. I need a little warmth:)

At first I was going to buy new shoes, but remembered these shoes I bought and have only worn once. Why not reuse them? They are not a perfect match with the shorts, but who will be seeing that slight difference in the black lights?!?!?!

Happy Halloween! It is getting close ..... two days!!!!!!!!

Idea for tiny spaces: Breakfast Settee

I came across this advertisement for Raoul Textiles, a company whose fabrics are full of color and pattern with a vintage feel to the cotton/ linen blend. I have used them before in a project and am always interested in their new products. However, besides the colors in this advertisement it is the placement of furniture that caught my attention.

Now that I am living in these tiny places in NY, I am forced to think outside the box, in terms of furniture placement. This idea of having a corner banquette/ bench placed against the wall with many pillows is a perfect transitional piece. When not using it for a dining table, it could easily be used as a sofa. Make sure you place your television in a spot that is visibly accessible from the table and magic- you have an upholsterd piece for two purposes. Not to mention, the table could be used as a desk, too.

Who says you can't have dinner parties, or tea parties, in a small studio!?!

Metropolitan Home & Showtime House: Tribeca- I am there!

If you are like me at all, the days just seem to fly by. Right now I am so intent upon doing and seeing things in this amazing city- the design capital of the world, the city that never sleeps, the city that offers more free things to do than anywhere else (which I haven't utilized AT ALL, but will) - basically, a concrete playground full of culture and excitement.

So..... I have been talking about going to the Metropolitan Home's Showtime house in Tribeca since this summer, and have yet to go. Well, thank goodness I sat in the bed last night catching up on reading the mags and found that this weekend is the last weekend! Phew! That was a close one. Going to be there on Sunday.....

The showcase house is designed by top designers whose rooms are inspired by the Showtime series: Dexter, Californication, The Tudors, Weeds, Nurse Jackie, and The United States of Tara.

Store Fronts Unite: Black & White

While my mother was here from CA, we, of course, did the Fifth Avenue walk. A lot of window shopping- not my most favorite thing, but it made her happy. I found some wonderful inspiration shots of store windows (love visual displays) and started snapping- I was now officially part of the tourist crowd on 5th Ave! Then noticed an underlying theme of the store windows- Black & White. Now, I already posted about how fashion and interior design mimic eachother with the Hearts posting, as well as the posting about Black and White. Here we come full circle.

Moschino changed their original red heart chair to black pin stripe with an overtly obvious reference to the trend - BLACK on a white bag

This window display at Saks is divine. With the high relief french inspired wall molding accented by the black trimming- my kind of space.

Originally I took this picture because I want to make a chest like this myself. Stay tuned for a DIY project on how to make one of these chests yourself.

Saks is promoting the new Coco Chanel biographic movie - Coco before Chanel.

I like the idea of painted frames on the wall at H&M showcasing a piece of fashion like an art piece. I would totally do something like this in a dressing room or even in a more formal setting- just depends on the level of sophistication you give it, in terms of color and item placed within the frame. Could also be perfect in a little girls bedroom.

Juicy Couture- This is more black and gray, but thought I would showcase the idea of the use of sticker decals for visual impact, as posted last month.

Since starting this blog, I am intent upon watiching everything around me. I am constantly taking pictures for things that inspire me and how, even if they have nothing to do with interior or event design, they can be applied to design in my life ..... or even yours. Try doing the same. You'll be surprised by what actually tickles your fancy.

Spooky TIme- Halloween's around the corner!

Halloween- a holiday that has progressively become one of my absolute favorite days. Basically, anyone who really knows me, knows that I LOVE TO GET INTO COSTUME! Perhaps it is my days of acting in the school musicals and local community theater, but if there is a chance to get dressed up, I will be! This year I am going make my PIN UP GIRL costume, but the real fun is decorating for the party.

Thankfully, my sister and her fiance have decided to host a halloween party and have enlisted my help as the designer extraordinaire. The budget is super small, but that's ok- keeps my creativity flowing. She wants it to be chic and spooky- and I was thinking a little GOTH. Sexy Goth though :) Her house already has a lot of ivory, black and orange; replace all the light bulbs with black lights and accented with many candles, and we've got a nice little backdrop to start off with.

My creative process is as follows:

choose a theme
think of hundred of ideas to execute it (large, small, ridiulous, expensive, cheap)
elminitate ideas, add more ideas
search the net for many images that could inspire ("sexy halloween," "chic Halloween Decor," "chic decorations," skulls, feathers, lights, etc.)
then start walking the vendors to see what "is" workable and in the budget for the most effect.
create the budget by getting everything we will use for the event
PURCHASE !!!!

At this point I am in between 3, 4, and 5, and was feeling a little frustrated. So I hit the streets for a little inspiration on Saturday and sunday. Here are things I saw on my walk that I thought could somehow be used for the party.

ABC Carpet & Home window display. This is like a spooky enchanted garden. I absolutely LOVE this. Birch branches, the tattered canopy, the leaves, and eery lighting are perfect materials for a chic halloween party.

My sister wants to have a wall of fabric. This type of application could be easy- just cut, cut, cut, cut, and affix to the wall. It think it would look great hanging on the wall and slightly (in the corners of the room) hanging on the ceiling, so you get the spider web effect.

I really, really, really, want to do something on the ceiling (but don't know if I'll win this battle) and thought this idea of ripped scraps of fabric tied to wire would be really fab!

Glitter skull found at Pottery Barn. It is $20 (a bit steep for a foam skull with glitter.) I am hoping to find a skull somewhere for super cheap and will then glitter it up for massive GLAM factor!

This ribbon treatment was on the eave/ awning of a little store in NoLita. I have seen this done often. It would look great in a door way long to the floor.

In the window of a hair salon in SOHO- Black roses in hanging bud vases with black water. I saw this all the way across the street and was instantly struck by how gorgeous and innovative this is- super easy to achieve.

Black Feathers, Ravens, Branches, fabric, rhinestones, roses............ so many materials that could work in this design.

Inspirations Everywhere: Saks Fifth Aveue

The Chivari Chair- You have seen these at many weddings, corporate events, etc. And if there is one thing I love, it is finding a random chair and making it into something bold and unexpected. I saw these in the Houseware Department of Saks Fifth Aveue. Saks is known for their visual department. This is a great little DIY idea. I thought they were so clever. Now, I am not saying this application of faux grass will work for everyone, but the concept of a bright color (on a chair that is otherwise gold or silver) with a funky seat cushion is a nice move.

Jeannie and I joke this could be a MARNI advertisement. We are both wearing those fabulous shoes to Buddakan (the restaurant in Sex and the City The Movie where Big and Carrie had their rehearsal dinner.)

As mentioned in the previous post, I have had a lot going on the past few weeks. Two wonderful things that happened was my mom coming into town for a week, and visiting my brother at Princeton for a water polo game. I haven't seen my mother or brother in over 8 months. It was so wonderful! All we did was eat and shop, a lot of cocktailing, and every night ending in a slumber party. Here are a few of the highlights!

Last night together, posing in the foyer of the Waldorf Astoria. It was an intersting time to be staying at the Waldorf. The G20 summit had just taken place and the entire hotel was swarming with secret service all week.

Oh geez, typical Amy- being a poser in a very dignified setting. Oh well, that's me. Take it or leave it! :)

Visiting my little brother aka "Brother" (that's an Arrested Development reference) at Princeton University. He is a second year at the US Naval Academy. He plays water polo and it was fun to see him play. Go Navy!

NAVY won!!! Beat Coast Guard - their big rival. I love seeing family!!!

All in all it has been a wonderful summer, and though the month of September was insanely busy, it was all worth it.

Back with Heart and Soul

I thought I would start off by saying how much I appreciate all of you who have contacted me, asking me "where I was." It's nice to know how much people appreciate reading my dailing rantings. I have been a bit overwhelmed at work and in life, and frankly, was getting a little stale on my postings. Nothing was creatively flowing from my brain any more. The Designista felt lost, with no theme and no heart, and I needed to take a little break to find its soul again.

I thought it appropriate to start this "welcome back" post, and yes, I am welcoming myself back, with the above advertisement. I was moved the moment I saw it- Nordstrom did its job! Not only does it appeal to my fashion sense, but to my inner most thoughts. I have had this on my refridgerator for possibly more than three years. It reminds me how we must go out and find our place in this world and in life- we can't sit back and wait for it to happen.

I know, this all may seem like a dramatic explanation for why I have been MIA, but it was important for me to share. And com'on, let's face it, I have never been one to shy away from talking..... my life is pretty much an open book.

So, that being said, I am going to apply the saying, "What if you didn't wait for opportunity to knock," to my blog, THE DESIGNISTA. And truthfully, to all aspects of my life. I have always dreamt of having this blog among many other aspirations, and love having the voice to discuss design, my social life, and my expedites through this new place- NYC.

There will be many things to look forward to, as I am trying to fine tune my purpose and theme of The Designista. But here are a few new things that will be added to the mix. Some I already do, but will do more, and others are suggested posts and ideas, as well as things to bring more traffic and excitement to the site.

Picture Perfect Console

Windsor Smith's home in Los Angeles (House Beautiful)

Consoles are essential to creating a gorgeous interior. Not only do they perform a function of holding things- art, figurines, lamps- but they also create little vignettes of interest where there would otherwise have been nothing. When creating a look on a console there are several things to keep in mind, and guidelines I like to follow.

Art/Mirror should be placed above it, and fairly close to the top of the console.
Floor Accessories- Put something underneath it, either an ottoman, chest, boxes, etc. The look should flow from bottom to top- like it is one whole unit.
Collections- I recently posted about how each room should have a collection of some sort. Here is a collection of clear perfume bottles with silver tops and a collection of Hermes boxes.
Stacking- Whether it be books, or in this case boxes, it adds a horizontal effect to a vertical look. You want to mix and match heights when accessorizing.
Flowers- EVERY room needs fresh flowers. Adding the organic feature freshens and romanticizes the look.
Figurines- Pile figurines on top of other things. It keeps order to the small space (no clutter) but allows you to bring different heights. See the little elephant on top of the single Hermes box?
Theme- Having a theme, like the orange in the photograph, the Hermes boxes, and the box at the bottom,brings the look together. Be careful though- too much of a theme can make it look like a visual display in a retail home store.
Unexpected accessorizing- Like this vintage Gucci handbag and black riding boots. Just because it should be going in a closet, doesn't mean it shouldn't be in the hallway of common space in a family home.
Layering- Put things of different heights in front of each other. See how the flowers are taller than the frame and in front of the picture? Just make sure the flowers, vases, candles, books, etc, aren't obstructing the main portion of the art.
Lighting- Though this look doesn't require it, a small table lamp could have been placed to the left of the photograph. Often consoles are a great way to provide a space to add light, especially in dimly lit hallways. On larger consoles, I love the look of two lamps or sconces flanking art or a mirror.

Shop Stop: Terrain- Philadelphia

I know that summer has officially passed and we are into the beautiful fall season that I have yet to see. Literally, I think the only time I have ever experienced a season change was when I visited Connecticut to visit my sister at Yale in Fall 2000. Wow....

That being said, I know we are ending the season of outside dining and gardening here in the city. However, that season is never over for the California crew. I wanted to introduce an amazing store, Terrain, that I found in Domino March 09 (sadly their last issue) and explore what they have to offer. In my opinion, exterior furniture can easily be brought inside for adding something unexpected to the design. The light fixtures are amazing. As well as their visual displays.

Originally, I tore this out of the magazine because I was so inspired by the dining design. How lovely would it be to dine outside with these gorgeous globe lanterns above head with dangling blown glass figures? If you have a patio cover/ pergola, you could easing hang several globes, and get individual glass/ crystals from the local craft store, hang from fish wire, and you've got the same look. Not to mention it would be so pretty during the day to have the prism effect from the sun hitting the faceted crystals. Day and Night design!

Texas Glider- This chair screams my mother's name :) The colors and age give so much character to this antique- $398.

Bespoke Slatted Bench- $1998. A little more expensive, but due to it's construction of galvanized steel, it will last forever, and keep its sheen. This is a reproduction of an antique, but I think this bench would look amazing in a garden, but could also be used indoor. I picture it in an entry with a couple of graphic pillows- Not in every interior, but if you are courageous enough to put a galvanized steel bench indoors, you probably have a fairly quirky design mind!

Rust Wire Edging- Knotted wire edging?!?!?!?! How cute is this? It is a little pricey at $24 for 18" of length, but could be perfect for a small length of garden patch. What about around a little pumpkin patch. Love it!

Two-Tier Plant Stand- $598 This reminds me of something that should be in the garden of the movie Great Expectations. Old, with peeling paint, yet still whimsical and romantic.

This store is in Pennsylvania, which isn't too far from NY. Looking forward to visiting one day. I know my green thumbed mother would be in heaven here!

Sticker Decor? Not Just for Kids

Remember when stickers were so fascinating to us as little children? Was it the color and texture and the fact that it gave us the ability to have a little design creativity- meaning we could "stick it" wherever we pleased? Remember when we would inevitably "stick it" in the wrong places; mirrors, car windows, car seats, counters, clothes, walls, etc.

As I look back, stickers are often given to little children in happy meals, which to me, is sort of silly since kids have no regard for nice things, making it a constant struggle between parent and child to keep the child from doing what is natural and "sticking it" somewhere. Why do people who give stickers to children want to create chaos I ask?

Alas, a day has come to bring the child out in all of us. Blik, is a company based in Venice, CA which has found a way to create interesting and bold wall art that is impermanent. I spoke about them yesterday, in my posting about Black and White.

"blik is made from an ultra-thin, self-adhesive matte vinyl film. blik Re-Stik™ is made from a slightly thicker, self-adhesive, polypropylene film." I used something similar to this once for two events I designed. This material is great for residential or commercial interior projects (they can even do custom murals.) All you do is pull it off the sheet and "stick it" wherever you like. This is great for renters or even those who want something unique and colorful on the wall but don't want to spend the money on wall paper or a custom hand-painted mural. All of these decals range between $30-$100 (pretty much.)

Seeing Your World in Black & White

I love the drama of black and white. I am immediately drawn to anything of this type of color scheme (Black= complete saturation of color, White= absence of color.) I love to wear it! I love fabrics, wall paper, stripes, etc. It creates ultimate drama in interiors and fashion. It can be playful, but most often I think it creates a "sexy" environment.

I think people get nervous to try this scheme for fear it will be too much of a contrast, but I wanted to show some examples of this look. You can go over the top, or understated. Try it in a small space first, if you can't bring yourself to go big with a larger room- i.e. a powder room, a single wall, even a piece of furniture- and I know you'll be impressed with the outcome.

I want a B&W striped powder room or entry so much I can hardly stand it! I love it! This is easy and affordable. This is a fun look, and an example of going over the top, by creating a "Circus" tent in the powder room.

Versace Home in LA. Sophisticated.

An example of creating massive drama in a small space. This is the entry into his apartment. In NY, for many apartments, you only have small spaces to work with. Why not go nuts?

Cythia Rowley's apartment in NYC. Here she has applied a decal to the walls of her shower. This is becoming quite popular for quick, inexpensive, dramatic, and easy for renters. Check out this site that sells these. www.whatisblik.com

This look can be achieved through actual molding or you could even paint it yourself.

Walls painted a glossy black in contrast with white high-relief molding is a wonderful and unexpected color scheme that is perfect for more classic interiors.

Anna Sui's NYC apartment/ Studio. Like her fashion designs, her apartment reflects her patterned and fun style. Here she adds a lot of patterns with touches of color just to bring a little pizzas to the spot. Love the commode turned lavatory!

Adding a black glass to an all white Secretary is a perfect little DIY/ custom feature to bring this scheme into your home.

Don't be afraid to make some risks when it comes to "risky" color schemes and pattern. Black and White works perfectly in modern or traditional interiors, whether you want to do an entire room or just a piece, it creates drama and makes a statement.

Long Island R&R

With the start of my new job, it is an understatement to say I have been stressed out. I have been working super long hours each day, which has been one of the reasons I have had less postings. And with that stress, comes a lack of creativity. So.... as you may have noticed, I have been going away each weekend, to basically decompress, as well as ground myself. Now with a little security in my career- had two big sales this week (hip hip hooray!)- I am able to relax, at least mentally.... for a bit. Definitely better design oriented postings coming. Actually got a lot of tips from friends this weekend on what they would like to see me add to the posting mix-up.

This weekend I had the pleasure of visiting my sister in Long Island, where we spent the day going to the marina at Port Washington, ate raw oysters and martini's (one of my favorite things,) drove around all the large estates, toured the Merchant Marine Academy (where Jeannie's Fiance coaches football,) and listened to all our favorite music we grew up on- Violent Femmes, Bon Jovi, Hootie and the Blowfish, Save Farris, and so much more....

A couple of highlights:

Tasting the most amazing wine I have ever had. Jeannie bought this bottle on a wine website where she finds expensive wines at discounted prices. She has been saving this, and let me tell you, UNBELIEVABLE! Australian Syrah- the best! I suggest buying this wine for a special occasion. Clarendon Hills

Collections- A Must Have

Accessorizing your home is what brings your personality to the space. However, there is a fine line between creating a cohesive space that is polished with bits of your quirkiness and style versus one that is a modge podge of chotchky junk/ trinkets that is reminiscent of a salvation army accessory wall meets great Aunt Margie's living room.

One thing that I feel all interiors need are collections. They can be collections of anything- tea cups, vases, perfume bottles, milk bottles, spoons, rocks, shells, etc. And...they don't have to be expensive. Collect them throughout your life, or set out one weekend to find "your collection." Like the picture of blue candle sticks and vases on a mantle, collections create a repetitive element that bring order in a unique way.

Some of my favorite places to find additions to collections: Ikea, Ross, TJ Maxx, Salvation Army, Target, Tuesday Morning, and don't forget finding pieces throughout your life on all your travels- cities, states, and countries.

The view from my apartment. That is where the WTC Twin Towers once stood. A commemorative memorial that stopped me in my tracks on my way home from work. With the hazy night, the way the light beams shot into the sky and hit the clouds was as if they transcended into heaven- beautiful and surreal.

I have met people since I lived here, and even prior to my move, who were here that horrible day. I know people who have lost loved ones and cannot imagine their pain on this day. I still get emotional even thinking about it, and truthfully, I try not to. With a brother who toured twice in Iraq as a marine, a sister who works daily on the rebuliding of One World Trade Center, another brother at the Naval Academy, as well as knowing many others who work to rebuild our community, the country, and the fight for our freedom, I believe, in fact I have to believe, we have made progress in this fight against hatred.

God bless those no longer with us and the families of those who served our country selflessly- 3,000 people who went to work on Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001. And let us not forget all the service men and women who dutifully went abroad, many enlisting after 9-11, to serve and protect our freedom and what we stand for as a country, the United States of America. And to them, I salute you and thank you with all my heart.

Art Walls- Easy with a Big Impact

My friend just moved into her apartment in the West Village, and finally has some wall space. She asked me to come over and help her with some design ideas for her new home. She has one wall that is quite large, for NY standards, and I kept trying (came over twice) to get her to do a wall filled with art - paintings, photos, posters, etc - which would fill up the space, give some color to the wall, and make a graphic statement. She was apprehensive to do so, until I started picking up the paintings and actually showing her how great it would look!

Trying to convey my idea of creating an "Art Wall" to Isil, my friend who just moved into her apartment in the West Village. What was supposed to be a quite night at home with a glass of wine and a few decorating tips, quickly became a 2am night with a lot of wine and many decorating tips, including moving things, hanging pictures and surfing the web for new and cost-effective lights and accessories!

Sitting in her apartment, thinking about how to hang all of her art, was a creative endeavor, and got me thinking about how most people have no idea what to do with their wall space. As mentioned, one of my favorite type of art displays is creating a wall that is covered in art and frames. It sounds like it would create chaos, but in fact, if done properly it can give order makes a cohesive environment. Now it seems like home.

I like how the frames are equidistant apart.

Framed and unframed thrift store finds- eclectic and romantic

Repetition of one type of art - great if you have a collection. These pieces are hanging on a piece of fabric.

Wall completely filled from top to bottom- I like how it is mostly black and white photos in frames.

You could find frames, and paint them different colors, and you've got your own art installation.

Drew Barrymore's office at Flower Films- Just printed photographs.

If you are artistic, you could make your own collection of art and hang it up. I know someone who framed her children's art. It was so playful!

The multiple frames on this wall look contemporary and orderly, even against the striped walls.

When you hang art, make sure that there are different heights and hang vertical and horizontal frames. It adds dimension.

Notice the frame on the mantle- something unique. An unframed canvas, sitting behind a single frame.

Another photo wall. I like this idea, but make sure all four corners are tacked down, otherwise, with heat and sun, the corners will start to curl up.

Here they have hung art on the wall, as well as a woven piece around the top picture, added a figurine at the top corner, and set a canvas on the floor. A lot of different applications, but it flows well.

I love this advertisement for ROMO. For you DIYers, try this idea. Find some beautiful graphic and textured paper and frame them. You don't have to scour high and low, create your own. This is soooooo me!

Art is an expression of yourself. It is personal and subjective. You can't go wrong!

Labor Day NJ Farm Fun = Corn Relish

Hope everyone had a fabulous Labor Day weekend! I went to NJ for one last weekend of fun in the sun before the weather changes. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. So what was originally planned had to be forfeited for more random and spontaneous fun. Stopping at a state monument and hopping over the border into New Hope, PA were among that fun! However, this little event was one of my favorites- stopping at a roadside farm to buy vegetables for a dish I was bringing to a BBQ in the city later on that night.

I love to cook and love fresh and organic produce. I made Nadia stop here for me, as my dish called for fresh corn.

Laughing at a woman who was flabbergasted that I asked if what I was doing was "shucking, right?" She asked, "where you girls from that you don't know this is shucking? Hey Jim, this girl doesn't know what shucking is?" It was pretty funny!

I had this at Nadia's house and was instantly hooked. I am not one who uses recipes and prefers to make things up as I go. This CORN RELISH is amazing alone, or added as a garnish on a garden salad, on eggs, with warm vegetables, pasta salad..... (I had all of these in the last two days!)

Simply halve the corn, boil for 10 minutes or less, cut the corn off the cob (after running under cold water) and add to a bowl of all the finely chopped ingredients you see above. Add lime, salt, and pepper to taste, and VIOLA! You have got one little fresh dish! The capitalized items are things that should have been added for more flavor!

I love it when I come with a full bowl and leave with a serving or two leftover- My job is done here!!!!!

It's the homemaker and entertainer in me that loves to know that people are happy with the food, the environment, the decorations, the drinks, the music etc. So, I found myself walking around asking my friends what they thought of my dish and how I could make it better. At one point, there were about 6-8 people around the bowl trying to figure out what possibly could have been added to make it even better... and the VERDICT- Cilantro and Jalapenos...... No hurt feelings here, just a little advise for better culinary art!

A timeless motif- Bamboo

I absolutely love bamboo pieces- not necessarily raw bamboo, but rather bamboo that is metal, or has been painted in an unexpected fashion. This design motif has been used throughout ages, and always adds a bit of Asian flair and especially elegance. You will see it as furniture, mirrors, dinnerware, accessories, lighting, fabric etc.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Crate & Barrel's Kyoto Flatware place setting- Understated and sophisticated..... If I was in the market for place settings, this is what I would buy. $36.95 for a 5-piece set

Lulu DK's Madison Indoor/ Outdoor fabric- This comes in many different colorways. We used this on a project in Beverly Hills draping the interior of a patio area poolside. We used it in the Chocolate. To the trade only- must use a design professional to buy this

Woodson & Rummerfield's Wilshire Regency Mirror- $200!!!!!!! Great buy! This is one of my favorite little design shops in Los Angeles off of LaCienega (where all the super hip and trendy design shops are)

JF Chen Antique Brass Bamboo bench with original leather- Circa 1950's: Found on 1stDibs.com - if you have not been on the 1stdibs website, you MUST TRY IT!!!!!! Many antiques shops list their products on this website- very reputable, and you can find soooooo many interesting, gorgeous, unique, and unbelievable pieces. Some inexpensive, some unbelievably pricey.

Nickel and gold plated serving tray- $430

Found at Geary's Beverly Hills, these serving accents are divine. If I had my way, I would buy these for brunch with the ladies, on a table scape of antique china from my grandmother, delectable pastries, quiches, mini-sandwiches, champagne cocktails, peonies and roses, and of course, A LOT of LAUGHTER!!!!

Bamboo accents are timeless. Add this to your interiors, and your home will exude elegance.

Cheers to you! Just got home from work and ready for a little R&R. Considering the fact that I sign each posting with a "Cheers," you would think I would have more of these up. That being said, I finally decided to start it tonight, and what is the only alcohol in the house- Sierra Nevada? ..... Probably will never see me with this beer again. Be different if it was a Hoegaarden, Grolsch, or Stella. But as you all know, a glass of champagne or ice cold Kettle One martini dry strait up with one olive is my drink of choice!

Animalistic Behavior

I was recently introduced to someone who is moving into a lovely home in the Northern California Bay Area. He is very excited about his move and has a discerning sense of style and quite aware of the interior world. He and I spoke for a long time about his plans for his home, his design direction, as well as asking advice on certain furniture pieces he was leaning towards. And you know me, anything having to do with design, I am all over it. It was really fun getting to talk about his plans and even found myself thinking of things he could do on my off time, as well as running through sources in my head that he could investigate. I'm so crazy! I'm not even his interior designer! :) It's just so fun to see someone happy in their space!

One thing he mentioned was the use animal print- actual hide fur- that he wanted to put on stools. I love the idea! He was a little apprehensive, but I assured him it is a wonderful idea. Our conversation inspired me to write about this topic. As I browsed through my files, I noticed that many of the interiors featured the use of animal print- stylized or actual hides! It should be used sparingly to add punch, but if executed properly, it really adds impact.

Zebra Hide laid on the ottoman with ties- Like it was an afterthought, not planned. This is one of my favorite entries- I just love the creative draping that makes me feel like I am in a make shift tent of a traveling diplomat in the desert.......

Florida Condominium- This chair covered in black and white zebra hide against the graphic painting almost takes on a sculptural quality itself.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ROOM!!!!!! There is so much going on, yet it still seems understated, but with a dominant undertone. This is a very sophisticated design, with the veneered wooden horizontal and white lacquered paint stripes, but adding the faux fur animal element, gives it an element of casualness and flair.

When it comes to hide, zebra is my favorite. I think it works beautifully on stools, ottomans, and benches.

This is a patchwork pillow of zebra hide... fancy and fun!

I am not sure what type of animal this faux fur is trying to mimic, but I think it adds a lot of glamour to this space.... especially with the high gloss flooring.

An exaggerated zebra print on hide pillow- a great addition to an otherwise stark patio

Not hide, but a leopard ice box on the cocktail tray.... That may be the only punch of animal you need!

If you look closely, you can see the pillows on the sofa are a stylized giraffe print with an inset tape trim on a mitered pillow. You don't have to go with hide, to get the same effect.

Zebra Printed Area Rug- this is a more practical application of the print on the floor. When you place an authentic hide on the floor, it starts to wear and look dull and bare. As a woven design, it is much more user friendly- especially with kids and pets.

Silk Velvet Leopard print on the vintage lucite chair. Gives the room character, right?

Here is the hide I was just talking about. I love the look, but you do have to make sure it is in a low-traffic area. FYI- this is printed zebra. If I am not mistaken, I don't believe you can have real zebra imported anymore (not that I would want to.) I am just saying!

Stylized Crocodile inspired fur throw- Sexy!

Personally, this pillow should be bigger, but I don't mind the combination. I actually like it, and I'm not even a leopard fan.

Ahhhhh..... Miles Redd- The King of "You have to have a punch of Animal in every interior." It subtle, but makes a statement. LOVE IT!

So the moral is, don't be afraid to mix patterns, colors, and textures with animal. As you just saw, numerous different type of styles utilized the same element of design, and though it created a different statement for each room, it certainly made an impact, that otherwise would have left the room lacking in thrill.

The Key..... Be Tasteful, and you got it goin' on!

Preview: City Guide to Princeton, NJ- Next Week...

Hey Everyone! I know I have been completely lagging on my postings, due to starting my new job (thank goodness)................. But I wanted to give you a heads up to a posting I will do on Tuesday next week.

Last weekend, I visited a friend of mine in Princeton, NJ and it was so wonderful- shopping, eating, sightseeing (driving in the car,) and lounging on the beach. This town is so cute and quaint with a lot of great boutiques, antique stores, and restaurants.

So...... I got the idea to do a "Design Guide to Princeton." I am going there again this weekend for Labor Day, and will do a little journalistic investigation and have a fabulous post next week! Really want to start September with a bang! Let's hope the weather is gorgeous and doesn't transition into Fall, as it is starting to get a bit chilly. (Listen to me, I complain when it's raining, hate when it's too hot, nervous summer is over and I'll have to start getting ready for snow... Gosh, NY just can't win with this Cali girl!)

From Fashion to Interiors- I HEART all of it

There is a trend I am seeing in furnishings, and most notably with fashion designers..... a trend that was once only seen in little girls' bedrooms, on their school book binders, or Valentine's Day cards, and that would be HEARTS. It is my daily passing of Moschino, Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson, and Stella McCartney, that initially led to this discovery. You will usually find me staring into the windows of these couture fashion houses lusting after what the mannequins are wearing, imagining when I would be able to afford these masterpieces, and better yet, imagining where I would be wearing them. But this day was a little different.

Moschino changed their visual window display to include a chair upholstered in red satin and velvet quilted hearts. It is so cute, and I immediately fell in love with it. Very playful and modern, yet still remaining sexy, with a little bit of sass!

Then, while scouring the Internet, I came across Vivienne Westwood for The Rug Company's Love-Hearts rug. Wow... Another heart inspired object of my affection.

Am I onto a trend here? I think maybe. What's interesting here is that these are fashion designers bringing this motif into their showroom or in VW's case, her interior line. Often you will find fashion imitating interior design or visaversa- an endless circle of inspiration. I believe this is a perfect example of that. Perhaps it was the collections of Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, and Moschino that have inspired this emerging design trend for Fall 2009 (not new, I know, but definitely new to the world of high-end living.)

Intrigued, I set out on a hunt to find the use of hearts in other stores, interiors, photo spreads, etc. Let me tell you, there is not much out there..... yet. I tried some of the hip stores I know of in NYC, websites, Jonathan Adler (the king of graphic accessories,) Target, Anthropology. I did find heart shaped mirrors on the site, A+R, the store in LA I blogged about the other day, that I really liked for only $96.

I picture this set of mirrors above the vanity in a dark powder room with traditional furnishings, giving it a pop of unexpected graphic flair.

The only other heart accessory I could find, was at IKEA- the Vanna for $7.99. I think these would make such a bold statement if placed on a wall in a repetitive collection. They could be lined up in rows on the wall at the end of a hall or powder room, or a single line down the wall of niche.

There is a trickle down effect in fashion, art, and design. The top designers decide what they love and how they will implement it into society, and eventually the masses catch on, and what was once a novelty is now a bore. The fact that I searched high and low to find hearts, and this was all I could find, can only mean two things.

It will not catch on and none of the big shot designers want anything to do with it.
My theory- we have caught the beginning of the trend, and will start to see this motif more and more, and I say by next spring, we will most likely start to see it everywhere.

Can't wait to see if I am right! :)

When it comes to the graphic design of the HEART, do not be afraid to use it, simply because it could be associated with being girlie. Creating irony is exciting when it comes to design. And who said there is anything wrong with being girlie!

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

When I first got out of design school, of course, I was unaware of all the uses of materials, and how they affect space and light-----but I thought I did. My first design job, with the ever so lovely Michelle Janczewski, opened my eyes to the world of mirror, among many other materials, that I never knew existed. And I am not talking about framed mirrors. I am talking about walls, ceilings, enclaves, panels, etc. It wasn't the 70's inspired gold flecked mirror walls of Scarface that I associated with mirror, but a glamorous, reflective, and bringer of light into interior spaces. I have since been collecting the work of many of my favorite designers now for years and thought it time to share this longlasting trick of the trade with all of you.

Unfortunately, at the time of finding these, I didn't bother writing down who is the designer, or where the picture is from, so I have to rely on my memory, which I hope serves me well. These are a few of my favorite mirrored applications.

Antique mirrored tiled walls applied in a subway design, with painted design. We actually used this as an inspiration photo for an apartment we were designing in Paris.

I wanted to show the use of a simple fully mirrored wall. The mirrored furniture in my opinion is a bit overkill, but the walls open up the hallway into what looks like a large room.

Mirroring the wall behind the bar in this pool house makes the room seem to go on forever.

Diamond Barratta Design (Another one of my favorite designers) designed this Florida home. Putting mirror behind lattice, makes the mirror disappear. Makes it look as though, it is part of the architecture.

Whether or not you like this design, is possibly up for discussion, but I do. I love the ancient Asian mural painted on the mirrored walls. Many put painted chinoiserie wall covering panels up in dining rooms, this a different take on that look.

Elsie de Wolfe design- a famous interior designer who gained fame in the early part of the 1900's, who is still revered as one of the great interior designers. Here, she boxed out the mantle of the fireplace with mirror and added the detail of real bamboo for molding. Look how the entire room has bamboo molding- LOVE IT!

Ahhh- one of my favorite uses of mirror- Dressing rooms and bathrooms....Make sure when adding antique mirror to interiors, use clear mirror where someone really needs to look at themselves, but the rest of the space can be in antique mirror. It doesn't take away from the look at all.

Designer Valentino created this tented space for a huge party in Europe. This is a tent! Can you believe it. This is the most gorgeous event I have ever seen. Look how the walls are mirrored with an Asian fretwork placed upon the mirror. True to form- Perfection!

Actress Chloe Sevigny's Manhattan Apartment- She placed a large painting on top of mirrored wall. The first time I saw this, it seemed like a trick. This was a really good idea to create the illusion of space.

Don't ever be afraid to use mirror. It is timeless and gorgeous!

Los Angeles: A + R Store

While thumbing through a recent magazine, an item was featured that piqued my interest. Looking to see where to buy it, I discovered A+R. This store is located in Venice Beach, CA, on it's famous main drag, where I have spent many days and nights, Abbot Kinney. For those of you unfamiliar with Venice Beach, a place I contemplated moving prior to my jump to the East Coast, it has the flavor of a small town with tiny little cafes and shops, but the mindset of an avant garde art community.

After looking at A+R's online store, it surely embodies this mentality. I absolutely LOVE what this store offers- globally and locally acquired lines with designs that really push the envelope, that are not only functioning pieces of design, but also relatively inexpensive. I will for sure become a patron of this store. A great place for unique gifts.

I have to say, I am obsessed with these little volcanic pieces of earthly heaven. Every piece is uniquely colored and shaped. To me, these are like jewelry.

One Year of White Pages- $38

I don't know about all of you, but I can't rely on putting things in my iphone whenever I have a thought. I mean, is paper becoming that extinct? I have a little leather note pad my sister got me that I carry around everywhere. But sadly, I am coming near the last page. At 3.5" x 4.75", this little book could easily fit in your handbag to capture all your daily thoughts- for a year!

Stick Lighters- $32

The stick lighters are actually what brought me to the A+R site. I just think they have a sexiness to them that every hostess should have hidden in their kitchen drawer. Perhaps this will be my new house warming gift!

Garland Light- $72

And this...... let me tell you, a very special person with a fearless interior vision can pull this light fixture off with flair! This pendant comes as a flat metal garland that you assemble into your own shape around an Edison Light bulb. How cool is this!?!?!?! I think it would be fabulous for event design as well. Comes in silver, brass, black chrome and winter white- HOT!

The great thing about technology is that you don't have to live locally to find the things that make your heart sing. When I head back to CA, I will definitely visit this store. In the meantime, I know where I'll be finding some gifts. Be sure to browse their website!

One day when leaving work, I did as I usually do- put my sunglasses on, put my ipod on, and walk to the subway. As I was walking, I looked up from the ground and was startled by loud yelling and many photographers standing right in front of me. I had no idea what was going on, but knew there was someone famous around me. Well, it was Kelis. I knew somewhere I would be included in the shots- Kinda Cool!

One thing that is interesting is that I worked on Kelis' wedding a few years ago to rapper Nas. I dined with her, spoke to her on the phone many times, sat in her bridal suite the day of her wedding, etc. I always wondered what I would do if I saw her in NYC one day, not knowing if she would remember me. Well, the moment came and went, because I certainly wasn't going to be the girl walking up to Kelis in the midde of a Pap frenzy!

It was fun though! I can't believe how many celebrities I see nearly everyday.

Stop Shop: Evolution

I used to walk past this store nearly everyday when I worked in Soho. I was always intrigued by the faux skeleton hanging outside the front door, and of course, as I have already mentioned my strange love of skulls at the moment, the signage including a skull.

Due to it's location in Soho, I knew it would be primarily filled with tourists, but apparently it has a loyal following with "museums, universities, private collectors, nature enthusiasts, interior decorators, and photographers." It has it's own entomology department and many of it's pieces have been obtained through paleontologists, anthropologists, and entomologists. The "hipster" staff is extremely helpful and inquisitive about your needs and will engage you in all your questions regarding each piece. I was taking pictures throughout the store and they even asked if I wanted to come behind the counter to get a better look. A friendly and eager staff is always a plus!

This store is filled with so many things, it is eye candy for someone who enjoys history and nature. The prices ranges from tiny little souvenir type gifts at $5 to a Woolie Mammoth tusk at $8000. I am sure there are more expensive things, since many are artifacts.

This picture does not show this mineral justice. It is a brilliant light blue, grey, silver, and stunning chartreuse green. This is like a sculptural art piece. Around $3000.

Butterfly Shadow boxes- I loved how vivid this wall is. You can choose your own butterfly from their selection upstairs in their museum area. Kind of a fun interactive and personalized gift!

After visiting Evolution, I was going through my design magazines this month and saw a lot of examples of this type of accessorizing. Here are just few!

Notice the barnacle piece and large shell on the coffee table, coral on the mantle and shelves. This designer/ homeowner went a little overboard with the shells. Key to accessorizing- you can have too much of a good thing. Keep it repetitive, or limit it to a few pieces.

House Beautiful's Color Personality Test- Very Fun!

The September issue of House Beautiful revolves around how to "find your COLOR personality." Though there is no key to answering the quiz, you will see that when you are finished, you will have naturally gravitated towards one or two colors. At the end of the quiz, I'll list the colors and the personalities associated with each one.

My answers fell into the Red and Pink categories-And I would have to say, it's not too far off, though nutty isn't listed in either of these :)

Rooftop Garden Party in the West Village

Summer finally arrived this week in New York. What better way to celebrate than having a party at my friend's grown up apartment in the West Village! They recently moved in, but have yet to host a party on their absolutely fabulous rooftop. Thankfully, the weather cooperated and we had a wonderful time!

As I mentioned in a previous post, the hosts asked we bring two of the following: "beer/ liquor/ flowers/ good attitudes." For this basic and slightly embarrassing arrangement, as I usually take much care in preparing my floral arrangements, I had to go on a last minute hunt. I mean, wouldn't you think that one of the biggest Kmarts in NYC would have vases? Apparently not. I told them I just couldn't believe that people who shop at Kmart don't buy flowers. This was just crazy. So I had to improvise.... I found tumblers that resembled small cylinder vases- Perfect! Now we could do six small little vases, instead of two large arrangements.

Obviously I was very proud of my little arrangements and how creative I was at problem solving! Check out the newly laid Astro Turf! Nice, right?

Dan and Heather were the lovely hosts. They always host the most amazing dinner parties. And Heather...... Wow what a cook! Look at the boutonniere on Dan's tank..... Remember last week, I posted about the "do-it-yourself" events at the Museum of Arts an Design? She made this there! Isn't that so fun?

I couldn't get this picture to turn out right, but these lanterns were a real hit at the party! I am so glad, too, because I got them for their housewarming gift. Dan and Heather found fallen branches on the street, dragged them home, hoisted them onto their roof and then stabilized them in two upright pipes. With the night breeze swaying the branches, the sound of moving leaves, the glowing lanterns hanging from the trees, and of course all of this with the back drop of NYC, a beautiful setting was created.

I bought them at Anthropologie. The first one, kept blowing out due to it's small size, but the latter two stayed lit the whole time. For those of you, who like to dine outside, I suggest buying these. They were great!

The Life of a Single Girl Living in NYC......BUGS

One of the reasons I started my blog was to catalog my experiences here. Yes, mostly about interior design, but also to give examples of the random happenings that occur daily. This is one of those postings. Not one aspect of it is design related, but it will be a memory permanently stamped in my brain, forever.......While happening, we were not amused. But as the half-hour long event continued, we made light of the situation with sarcasm and laughter, mixed in with shrieks of horror.....

So I am laying in my bed, completely engrossed in the "Bella/ Edward" saga of Breaking Dawn, but starting to doze off, as this is my 24th day working strait. Out of the corner of my eye, I see something dark moving down my wall. Am I that tired I am seeing things? Was it my hair covering my eye? No.......... it was a 2" long cockroach moving down the wall towards the ground, where it would surely find a million places to hide in this tiny apartment filled with stuff.

What should I do? How will I get rid of it? I can't hit it, because my biggest fear is that it will jump on me and start to bite me and then I would probably die. But if I let it get to the floor, I won't be able to find it, and therefore will never be able to sleep..... again. So I did what any normal female does, and jump out of my covers, stand up on my bed in my underwear in front of two open windows and scream!!!!!!!!!!! Yelling for help. Were my roommates home? Who would help me? Panic sets in. The sweat starts to pour out of my pores, and I can feel the tears coming just as I hear my roommates coming to my rescue. At this point, the enormous bug had scurried off under my dresser, where Chloe (my cat,) had taken guard.

Liz walks in, ready to fight the beast with her American Flag Doc Martins, but we couldn't see it anymore. We were afraid it had gone into my closet. All I could think about was how I was going to get any sleep. WE HAD TO FIND IT! Thankfully, my roommates were as enthusiastic about that notion as I was. So, Megan laid on the ground with my desk lamp and started looking for it..... Ah Ha! It was posted on the leg of my dresser. At this point, and I am still in my underwear, we are prepared for war. What was the worst that could happen? It could go under my bed? No way.... not with the weaponry of a Doc Martin. As we pulled out the dresser, I backed up ready to jump on the bed again, Liz slammed her boot against the dresser leg, Megan screamed "NO," I started jumping up and down, saw it scurry from under the dresser, and Liz slammed the boot on the floor again. Megan is on my bed now as all mayhem has broken loose, and we are screaming as we realize the horror that now must take place. We have to go under my bed..... NOOOOOOOOO!!

I immediately yank all the bedding off for fear that bug will somehow find his way into my bed linens and hide there, forever, or at least until I wake up in the middle of the night with it on my face. My things are flying everywhere. Megan and I lift the mattresses and leave Liz to sift through my things, mainly boxes and bags, to see where it could be. Why we allowed the girl who failed twice at killing it to keep trying? I think because neither Megan nor I wanted the job. But it would have made sense to give the job to someone else, because as we lift another box, Liz yells, "it's right here," makes another two attempts and it is gone under the radiator..... ugh..... the mattresses came slamming down.

How are we going to get rid of this escape artist? Megan yells, "Hairspray!" I grabbed my bottle and we sprayed. It wriggled and escaped a bit longer, but we were on his tail, and hairspray combined with Windex is a death trap. He was squirming so much, we actually did get to use the Doc Martin, for final execution, but it was meant to put the guy out of his misery.

I laugh thinking about what my neighbors thought, if any of them saw or heard our behavior. It definitely would have been a show! Three crazy girls running, screaming, and jumping on the bed, while half dressed...... classic!

Besides the fact that I still feel like bugs are crawling on me, I think it is safe to say that I can go to sleep now. At least until I see the next big thing!

Shop Stop: B-4 it was Cool

Remember my posting about the crazy off-the-wall street antique shop meets circus fair, Billy's Antiques and Props? This place, B-4 it was Cool, is on the other side of East Houston. Intrigued by places that have no signage, I crossed to other side to take a peak and see if this was a junk shop, or treasure shop. Interior design is subjective and what one may find fabulous the other may find horrific. I love salvaged pieces, so though most were items I would probably not use for projects, there were many interesting items that I could definitely place in specific interiors that called for the use of "industrial antiques"- mainly lighting.

Walking into the store, I was greeted by an extremely friendly gentlemen who actually offered to give me a back rub...(I had injured my back and had a slight limp, and yeah, it was as weird as it sounds) but I knew he meant nothing by it, and was quickly followed with a "I didn't mean that to sound the way it did. Sorry." And I...being the friendly girl I am, put his nervousness to rest with a smile and giggle, and ignored the comment. It makes me laugh thinking about it, even now!

Doesn't this look like a store front that should be in a small town in the south, not a busy street in Lower Manhattan? With the chipping white painted wall, the antique fan, and faded American flag blowing in the wind?

He showed me around the store and explained that most pieces are industrial items, meaning they weren't necessarily built for beauty, but rather for its actual purpose- providing light, a seat to sit on, a bench to work on, etc. But I have always found "old" and "unimportant" pieces to be so fun. I love to think of their history and who owned it, the life they had, where are they now. I am just sentimental I guess. As a little girl, I remember digging through remnants at Davis Lumber Co. (my families business and over 100 years old) and finding an old ink jar and a fountain pen. I was so excited about it, and actually kept it on my book shelf for many years.......

Most pieces are from the late 19th century to mid 20th century and have a price point ranging anywhere from $200 to $6000. Here are a few of my favorites.

These are flush mount ceiling fixtures with a faceted mirrored dome and exposed light bulbs.

Change the light bulb to a light bulb with an exposed filament and you have a modern industrial antique fixture.

I picture these kitchen lamps as perfect lights over an island in a huge farmhouse style home in the Hamptons, Nantucket, or somewhere in the Carolinas (I haven't been to any of those, but I sure picture it!) Perhaps even with a hint of a nautical theme, or maybe even Americana! That's for you mom!

These iron exterior wall lanterns were a pair and really beautiful and quite large- probably 36". These are perfect for flanking the entry doors of a home of Spanish or Mediterranean architecture.

Obviously, this is not American industrial, but there are a few items sporadically placed throughout the space, that the owner has collected through his antique travels.

As you walk down the tiny stairs into the basement, it feels like you are time-traveling into the workshop of a blacksmith in the early 1900's. You can't see it, but on the left there is a whole antique tool section.

I really love this piece and would have to say it is my favorite at approximately 48" diameter. I am not sure where this would be used, but its iron and wood workmanship is definitely something to admire.

Stop into this little shop on the corner and I know you will find something unique! And if not, raid your grandfather's garage. I bet there are tiny little treasures with great stories to be found.

Imaginary Amy

You know those things you have, in my case, this picture, that may not hold much significance now, but because it once did, you just simply can't get rid of it? This is one of those instances. As you can see, this pic has been folded, probably washed, moved from office to office, home to home, and it still stays with me.

Why might you ask? Well, I ripped it out of a Boston Proper catalog in 2006 because moving to New York was always at the forefront of my desires. Even with a long term relationship and secure job situation, which kept me from making the move, it was still always at the surface. So, I ripped it out, and put it on my bulletin board at work, just in case I ever needed to buy a pea coat quickly and move to the east coast! Silly right? Maybe not.

Now I hold onto this picture because it reminds me of my dreams. And..... how even when it seemed like something that would never happen, I finally took the plunge, faced my fears, and moved- three years later. Wow.... is all I can say.

I don't want to sound like I am tooting my own horn, but I am really proud I followed my dream. Whether or not I stay out here forever, is yet to be determined. But one thing I do know, is that life is so much more fun, when you dream. And most of all, making an effort to live your dream.

A friend of mine sent this information to me this morning and I simply can't wait to go! This is why I love NYC.... There is SO MUCH going on in this city for free that one should never claim they are bored.

For the month of August, Thursday nights at the Museum of Arts and Design, will host a night of crafts led by artists and designers inspired by the materials and techniques of the items currently on display at the museum. This sounds like so much fun!

ETSY has partnered with the museum to produce these nights of do-it-yourself fun! For those of you that are not familiar with ETSY, it is a site where designers and artists can sell their handmade goods. There is a lot of interesting items on the site, but also a lot of "church bazaar" items as well! ;)

"The series kicks off on Thursday, August 6 with a workshop lead by artist Sabrina Gschwandtner, founder and editor of KnitKnit. Sabrina will demonstrate a few simple ways to combine textile art and jewelry into one beautiful project: crocheted jewelry. Sabrina will be teaching how to make earrings (design by Julie A. Bolduc) and boutonnieres that are perfect for summer weddings, picnics, and barbeques. Materials will be provided."

If I am able to go, I will for sure post pictures of the finished product. Really looking forward to it, and more importantly, I am looking forward to exploring this city!

Let's Party!

Today, I got an invitation for a rooftop party at a couple's house for this Friday! I am so excited, as we have hardly had a chance to enjoy the warm and beautiful New York summer sky line, as it essentially has been raining non-stop for three months. Being the stylish friends that they are, the theme is "garden party," where we are all to wear our summer best! A themed party where we dress up- I am all about it!

Those that know me are familiar with my obsession with entertaining. However, due to the tiny little shoebox I currently call home, I am unable to do so, and rely on entertaining that obsession by doling out advise to those who have the means to entertain. They requested we bring two of the following: "beer/ booze/ flowers/ good attitudes." I choose the latter two, of course!

This invitation got me in the mood to post about some lovely garden party designs- some in the city, some in an actual garden, and all using both indoor and outdoor furniture for design. Picture yourself with a cocktail in hand enjoying a summer day or night in these spaces with friends and family...... my idea of a perfect day!

Windsor Smith in her own backyard in Los Angeles. She uses both indoor and outdoor furniture and fabrics for her exterior design. As long as you have a place to store the furnishings when the weather is poor, this is a great idea! Especially for those on a budget- you can take things from inside your home and use them temporarily for the party. The trellis design is absolutely divine!

Miles Redd also uses a trellis design for a patio in NYC. However, true to his glamorous form, he put mirror behind the trellis wall treatment. Perfection! The black and white painted decking, the vintage iron chairs and sofa, mirrored coffee table, live foliage, and NYC backdrop are reminiscent (at least to me) of the many garden scenes from Rear Window with Grace Kelly and James Stewart.

For those of you with an expansive backyard, this simple linen table cloth, wild flowers, over sized urns and candelabras, and teak chairs are perfect for creating a Tuscan or French country side themed dinner. Picture yourself here, carafes of wine, gourmet cuisine and good conversation and laughter......so peaceful.

I love how the vintage chairs are mismatched. This is such a romantically decorated table. I feel like this would be the perfect setting for a brunch with girlfriends drinking champagne, and eating egg souffle, tiny sandwiches and delectable pastries and deserts. Doesn't that sound fun?!?!?! Let's do it!

I just love this picture because, for some reason, it reminds me of my lovely grandma, Martha Jeanne Scott Swigart aka Grammy. I miss you Grammy! She was always a Diva of the home, fashion, and kitchen. I believe I have a childhood memory of eating at a table like this on her poolside patio. This is an example of bringing the garden party inside..... This is a good idea for the city dwellers, considering most of us don't have patios and decks. Remember this furniture? I love it! Picture an antique mirrored inset table top. So vintagely chic!

So plan a little outside dinner party with your loved ones this weekend! All you need, is a sunny sky, some flowers, candles, and a basic table cloth, plus a few little accessories and you've got your chic garden inspired party!

Back to Basics: Nature

Like I said before, I have been going through my inspiration file magazine rip outs and came across the above picture. To me that picture is so gorgeous and I wish I was, at this very moment, standing in the midst of those hot orange and chartreuse green leaves and mist in the background. Isn't it surreal?

I started noticing other pictures I ripped out that had the same color scheme. Like these Christian Louboutin heals that were in a www.shopvogue.com advertisement a couple years back. Yes, the shoes are fabulous, but I loved the green satin mixed with red leather combination. So, we can see how the colors of nature influence fashion, but I wanted to see if I could find any interior shots that were influenced by this same color scheme. Then I came across this Nina Campbell advertisement for Osborne & Little (fabric house for "to the trade" only customers.)

First I want to point out, that none of these images look "Christmasy" in the least. Do you think so? Always think outside the box with color schemes. A slight acid green mixed with red that is more blue than orange can make all the difference.

Bottom line, designers and artists are often drawn to nature for inspiring them in their art. There is no reason why you can't do so as well!

Pretty and Pink

After just going through my inspiration files, I found so many ideas for postings. I thought I would start with my very favorite photo. It is above. I am so drawn to both Red and Pink and this vignette evokes what I love so much about each color. The red leather clad console with nailheads- bold, chic, masculine. The light pink walls- sensual, soft, feminine. The magenta flowers- excitement, thrill, and passion. I know it may sound dramatic to talk about design this way, but perhaps that is why some of us get into this profession....because it does evoke those emotions. Can you understand why designer's love their job so much?!?!?! :)

I have had the above picture on my wall for a couple years now. I just love it. Well, I came across this image of a silk flower and immediately thought of my dream photo. How perfect would these silk flowers work on that console? Silk flowers are great if you find a stem that actually looks like a real flower. They can be expensive, but thankfully these are not too bad.

This I wanted to include as well, to show that when designing, colors and ideas can come from anything. This was a box of truffles that my friend brought back from Heathrow Airport in London. These are strawberry champagne truffles and the best piece of chocolate I have EVER had....... I beg her to get them every time. That being said, I was so mesmerized by the color of the box, that I took it with me and have kept it for years as well, knowing that one day, I will have a paint color specifically mixed to match. The box is so beat up, even my dog attacked it and their is a lipstick smudge on it too, but I still keep it.

Add the perfect unique red console, the vibrant silk flowers, the paint color to match, and viola, I've got my own version of the picture.

Whenever you find something you love, and it doesn't matter if you don't know what to do with it- keep it, for you may find a use later on. But truthfully, if it speaks to you in a way that brings a positive emotion, why not display it as a reminder of those feelings. Finding art and inspiration in unusual places is what pretty much what occupies my mind all day!

Good Morning Everyone! I was looking through my inspiration file last night for things to blog about this week (if you have been paying attention, I have done one every day!) and came across this restored outdoor/ indoor pavilion.

House and Garden

The thing about ripping things out of magazines for inspiration (which I recommend everyone do,) is that you can't go back in time to find the whole article and get more description on the room or find out where something was purchased. What I do know, is that I love the elephant floor lamp and table combination. The use of elephant in design is so "hot" right now. Though this image is at least a year old, you can see elephants in all aspects of interior design and fashion. I have always wanted to have an elephant side table in my interiors, so I decided to do a little research. If you are like me, and budget conscious, these have really great prices!

Shop Stop: Alan Moss

When I worked in Los Angeles for an interior design firm, our projects were so high-end that I was blessed to be able use some of the finest fabrics and furnishings around. Two of our projects, an Art Deco inspired building in London, a Classic French apartment in Paris, called for the use of authentic antiques. I even got to shop for antiques in Paris! Oh what a day!

The other day I was walking near my house and stumbled across an antique shop that we often would specify products from- Alan Moss. In order to get in, you must ring the door bell. Once inside, it is hard to focus at first because the place is packed so tightly with gorgeous pieces whose origin span the century and, due to their expensive price, have rich pedigrees as well, I am sure. A goal of mine- to one day have my own projects (and hopefully for my own home) that would allow me the opportunity to purchases antiques from dealers such as Alan Moss.

That being said I took a bunch of pictures of some pieces that caught my eye and it was quite fun to see things that I had once admired while working for MJDA. I have a dream to one day have my own projects that would allow me to buy antiques from places such as this.

This is MY FAVORITE combination! I just love how fluid and round this is.... like whipped cream. A close image below. This is plaster.

Faux Bamboo gilt side table with clear resin and gold leaf top. This piece is gorgeous. Look at the image below for a close up of the top.

I wish you could see this in person. This vignette, was my favorite in the showroom. The commode is cream with gold leaf detail on the facade, the mirror is gilt wood, and the lamps are gilt. I couldn't get any closer, because there is furniture from where I am standing all the way to the commode.

Inspiration's Everywhere: Tory Burch

Fashion and interior design go hand in hand. One of my favorite designers, though at this point have had difficulty affording, is Tory Burch. Her designs are so vibrant and graphic, that they just make me feel alive and giddy when admiring them. My sister is one of her biggest shoe fans! She has about every pair known to woman. So it's no wonder that her store in Nolita, and every other one of her stores I've visited, could be an inspiration for design.

In many high-end stores, they won't allow you to take pictures inside, and with the hawk-eye sales person hovering over my shoulder, I wasn't in the mood to be reprimanded. However, I was able to take a picture of the facade, which in regards to this particular store, is my favorite aspect of the design.

TORY BURCH- 257 Elizabeth Street, New York, NY 10012

I love the unusual combination of orange, fuscia, and hunter green. I am one who is all about color, but not even I would have put this combo together at first. If you peak inside the door, the carpet is a lime green which makes it seem like you are walking onto grass, or a luxury version of a Palm Spring's 1960's patio covered in astro turf.

This front door is such a bold statement. The exaggerated height, the glossy orange paint, the acrylic and polished brass handles, and brass fittings at the base of both doors give this front door experience one of high class!

If you don't notice architectural details such as this high-relief masonary design, start noticing! There are beautiful details that often blend into the backgroud. At first, I thought this was just a graphic design applied to the structure. Though, after looking more closely, I believe it is a play off of her well-known "T" logo. I could picture a carpet in this design; cut silk pile with wool loop pile as the fore-ground/ field....... the T's slightly raised above the background...... ahhhhh.....that would look lovely.... say in black on white, aqua on orange, or ivory on ivory.... gorgeous and glamorous!

Whether or not you like her clothing line, stop into Tory Burch the next time you pass this store, and marvel at her interior design- it is something to covet!

My Life: A New Job!!!!!!

Good Day Everyone! I am so sorry to have been ignoring you all for so long:( My creative energy was drained from focusing on finding a new job and I am proud to announce- I just started as an inside Sales Rep for the gorgeous and sleek Hudson Furniture Inc. in the Meat Packing District. For those of you that live in New York, it is directly above Stella McCartney on 14th Street.

I am so blessed to get this job, when there are still so many unemployed highly-educated people in NY. Most of all, I am thrilled with myself for making the call. I actually bought a piece of petrified wood from them when I worked as an interior designer in Los Angeles. I called them, reminded them of their dealings with me, they remembered, and were apparently impressed with my demeanor over the phone in the many laborious conversations we had over two years ago, scheduled an interview the next day, met the owner three days later, and was hired the next day! Can you believe it?!?!?!! I have never had a professional interview process move so rapidly.

Moral of that story: always be polite in your personal and professional dealings, trying never to burn bridges. You never know who you will need or need to know later on. Two women imparted their wisdom on me years ago that I have tried to live by in my adult and professional life: "Kill 'em with kindness. You'll always go further." And, "Walk in a lady, walk out a lady." I think this attitude could be one reason for being hired so quickly..... and let's not forget my charm and intellect!!!! ;)

You must check out the furniture on the website, hudsonfurnitureinc.com, as it is simply stunning. It is such a wonderful place to work surrounded by such beautiful pieces of art; fitting that the pieces are displayed in the showroom as if it was an art gallery.

Flower Power Chandelier in Iron with Blown Icicles- We have this in the showroom in Gloss Nickel with clear icicles, but it also comes in powder coated black and white. This piece is 48" in diameter- A real statement piece

Plexi Console- A gorgeous piece. In person, this is quite magnificent. The organic wood paired with the modern elegance of the plexi make it an extremely glamorous piece of furntiure.

Divian Sofa- (above and below image) The upholstery quality is exceptional and the wood frame is simply gorgeous. The wood is French walnut and you provide your own fabric (in designer terms, that is COM, or customer's own material.)

This would be a sofa you would buy if you had a seating arrangement that was "floating," or in the center of the room away from the wall.

Antique Teak Root Coffee Table. These are one-of-a-kind. The teak is hand polished or sanded and then sprayed with an acrylic finish to give it the sheen. Beautiful!

I am so excited about this new opportunity and to finally be back in the design community in New York City.

Wish List: Swarovski Crystal Chandelier

I was walking in Soho, as I do nearly everyday, and happened to come across the new Crystallized Swarovski Elements store. I love everything about rhinestones, though, thankfully, I never did join the Ed Hardy bandwagon, and wanted to see what new items were being introduced. One step in the door, and I was mesmerized by the stark white and taupe interiors infused with mirror, glass, and raw cut crystals. I never made it to the merchandise....

This store is not a typical Swarovski retail store. I was actually standing in a lounge called "Crystallized" that doubled as a museum for Swarovski products, though they are still awaiting their beer and liquor licence. A costume Emmy Rosum wore from the movie "Phantom of the Opera," fashion hand bag competition winners, in-house Swarovski visual displays, and a portrait of Mr. Swarovski, were among the exhibits to admire.

And then I saw it...... the most beautiful chandelier I have ever seen in my life. The Cascade...... Breathtaking....... It looked like the heavens had opened up and dropped a waterfall of diamonds to the ground. Max Azria of BCBG has this in his glamorously eccentric home in Los Angeles.

According to the sales associate, this piece retails for approximately $130,000. In my opinion, if you have the space, this is like a rare art find or antique piece of furniture. Its worth is in the eye of the beholder, and most likely all could not help but behold this masterpiece!

Girl About Town: Sweetiepie Restaurant

Today was my good friend Nadia's birthday and I decided to treat her to an afternoon of delight at Sweetiepie Restaurant in the West Village. Though she is from New Jersey, she doesn't venture into the city all that often and thought we could both experience something new together. Cocktails and dessert? I'm in and knew she would be too!

I recently heard about this restaurant randomly through a blog reviewing the interior design and immediately became intrigued. Not too long after, I happened to meet the pastry chef in passing. Coincidence, I think not! I was being beckoned by the design and dessert gods to get over there and scope this place out for myself. Let me tell you, the pictures do not do Sweetiepie's interior justice. It's like eating in a grown-up fairy tale; a giant birdcage surrounding the coveted front window table, scrolled chairs and high back pink leather tufted sofas, crystal chandeliers, silver candelabras placed on every table, and mirror covering all wall and ceiling space making the room so bright and airy, you can't help but feel like your a character in a sophisticated and chic version of Alice in Wonderland!

For the cocktail, we got The Sweetiepie; a champagne, St. Germaine, and pomegranate mixture. It was divine! And.... thankfully got me out of my so-called "Grinch" mood. There was a 5 year olds' birthday party with 15 kids running rampant, yelling, and blowing those horn blowers the entire time. Hey, I don't know what to say, in my grown-up fairy tale, I never considered the Chuck E. Cheese element to be included! And I love kids and Chuck E. Cheese!

The birthday girl enjoying her Sweetiepie! Earlier in the day, a waitress at lunch (not here) spilled a bottle of beer on her! She doesn't seem to be bothered, does she? Have another Nadia!

I had to take a picture of the ceiling...... see how the whole place is reflective? Almost like a fun house!
Behind the bar, the built-in niches house alcohol as well as jars of candy. The niches paired with the sofas and mirrored walls, give the decor a Hollywood Regency flair. So glamorous!

Our choice of desert was a good old-fashioned banana split- YUM-MY! Desert is served with a cup of crayolas and a placemat consisting of games reminiscent of the Highlights magazines you find in your doctor's office. Definitely entertaining as well as providing concrete evidence that Sweetiepie is kid friendly! Uh-oh, I am sounding like the Grinch again...... just kidding!

I am really looking forward to going again. I think this place would be perfect for a bridal or baby shower or just a gathering of friends celebrating their connection as women who equally enjoy eating and drinking as well as glamorous interiors!

Inspiration's Everywhere: Steak Frites

I was walking down 16th Street near Union Square and saw these pendant shades hanging above the bar in Steak Frites, an American style bistro. I thought this was such a creative take on the typical lampshade. I had to run in and take a picture!

This inspired me to march back up the street to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and buy a lampshade and try this myself. Would you believe that this lampshade, the ones I grew up with, probably because they were the least expensive, are nowhere to be found? I am thinking these may be considered vintage!?!?!? What....? So... my do-it-yourself task is put on hold until I can track one down.

Lampshades can be quite costly, so if you have any of these "old-fashioned" shades laying around in the attic, try this. All you need is gorgeous ribbon, an exacto, and the ability to tie a pretty bow!

Inspiration's Everywhere: Free People

I was walking around today and stopped into the Free People clothing store in Union Square. They have this great do-it-yourself art display on the wall. All you need is paint, cardboard, rhinestones, and a fabric of your choice. I love this look!!!!!! The Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People team always have the most amazingly creative visuals.

The above image shows a wall of cardboard art. They have it displayed all over the store. I just love the idea. Some of their clothing right now is sequined. The visual team must have been inspired by the clothing.

This design consists of white paint and silver spray paint and glued on rhinestones.

A close up: 4 wooden slats nailed together to make the frame with the cardboard fastened to the top of the frame with a staple gun.

This design is not as easy to accomplish! If you are skilled with an exacto knife, you could attain this look! Better make sure you have a lot of exacto blades on hand though! This is four layers thick and the dimension of it is beautiful! (1) the wooden frame, (2) cardboard wrapped in sequined fabric, (3) cardboard cut into a leafy design, (4) another leafy design as the top layer.

Choose your own fabric, materials, paint, cut out design and you've got your own art wall! Stop into a local Free People soon, so you can see what it looks like in person. It's really fun!

Dream Team: Jonathan Berger in House Beautiful July 2009 issue

This is the first posting of my "Dream Team" segment. "Dream Team" will consist of designers I admire (some well known, some just discovered,) or featured designers in magazines, such as this posting. Basically, if I could put together a team of the most amazing designers I have ever discovered, they would be on my "Dream Team." Let's meet the first designer!

The House Beautiful July 2009 issue features a Brooklyn Brownstone home designed by Jonathan Berger. I had never hear of him before, but apparently he grew up in my neck of the woods- Pasadena, CA!!! Thankfully he had a client that embraced his outrageous use of color and materials! This home contains many things I am passionate about and hope to have in my own home one day!

In the living room, an Italian brass faux bamboo table with hot pink leather upholstered chairs. Silk Ikat fabric covers the chaise and chair in the background. I am in LOVE with Ikat- timeless fabric.

Hot pink wall in the entry is an interesting combination with the antiques placed against it! Very daring and very perfect! Benjamin Moore: Razzle Dazzle

This living room is like a dream! De Gournay hand painted chinoiserie wall panels cover the walls, antique mirror used to disguise what was an opening to the kitchen, antique murano glass sconces flanking the wall treatment, and the many uses of pattern, color and material show that no room needs to be matchy-match for it to work beautifully!

Antique mirror used in the cabinetry is very glamorous and perfect for a small kitchen.

A version of the 1940's Serge Roche (a famous artist of plaster and mirrored pieces) mirrored bed was used for the client's 14 year old daughter. I want to be her!

This house appeals to me in so many ways, the bed, the hot pink wall, the antiques, use of antique mirror, the chinoiserie wall covering....mmmmmmm..... this house is tasty! Thanks House Beautiful for sharing.

Though I am excited to experience this holiday in a new place, I can't deny the fact I feel a little homesick for the wonderfully fun and outrageous 4th of July celebrations at the beach in Orange County, California. Oh well.... a new chapter and a new experience! Tonight I will be going to a bar-b-que or two, but am really looking forward to seeing the fireworks over the Hudson. Here's a picture I got online showing what I am to see tonight.

Inspiration's Everywhere: Henri Bendel

Welcome to my first "Inspiration's Everywhere" blog segment. When I am out and about in the city, I am constantly being inspired by things I see. Anytime I come across something fabulous, I'll take a picture, and put it in the "Inspiration's Everywhere" segment featuring where I saw it and how it inspired me.

Recently, I was at Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue and saw this decorated dress form in the jewelery department. It is covered in short pieces of chocolate brown and white polka dot gross grain ribbon.

It immediately caught my eye because I have been searching for a used dress form to stand in my room as a necklace display, but didn't know how I was going to decorate the muslin. Now I do!!!!! Hip Hip Hooray! I have always thought dress forms are like pieces of sculpture. Not only will it be an art element in the room (when I am finally able to buy one- they are pricey,) but it is also functional for displaying all my long necklaces and....I can pin my vintage broaches on the form.

Next time you go shopping, look beyond all the merchandise. Maybe you'll find the answer to the design question that's been plaguing you too!

Wish List: Peacock

I will just say this right now- I LOVE ANYTHING PEACOCK!!!!!! That is why I am soooooo happy to see that this gorgeous creature of nature is influencing all aspects of design everywhere!

I grew up going to the Arboretum of Los Angeles in Arcadia where the peacocks wander freely throughout the botanical gardens. I remember as a young girl how impressive their feathers were- both in height and color. They say Aquarians are attracted to the color turquoise; perhaps that is why I am in love with their grandeur!

The use of peacock as a design element in interiors is ageless. I was watching two movies recently, both of different eras and locations, where peacock motifs were included in the set.

Pride & Prejudice (2005) starring Kiera Knightly, Dame Judi Dench, Matthew MacFadyen- taking place in 19th century England. This is the scene in the movie where Dame Judi Dench is scolding Elizabeth Bennett at dinner for not knowing how to play the piano. Look to the right of the screen.... though this picture was the best I could get, there is an urn of actual Peacock feathers used as a decoration. This look is easy to achieve. Buy Peacock feathers and put them in your own vase of choice! Viola- Hollywood Chic!

Evening (2007)- Starring Claire Danes, Natasha Richardson, and Vanessa Redgrave- taking place in the 1950's in Newport, Rhode Island. I love murals and especially hand painted murals. The set for this movie was a private estate, The Ledges, in Rhode Island originally owned and painted by Howard Gardiner Cushing. This is authentic....and absolutely beautiful!

I want to show you where we can see the use of peacock making its way into the interior world right now- but honestly, I don't think it ever left. It is just more pronounced now as the big designers in fashion and interiors are including it in their lines!

Matthew Williamson, fashion designer extraordinaire, opened a showroom in NYC, where he also showcases his new rug collection for The Rug Company. Isn't it divine?!? I can't wait to see this in person! This design, Peacock Dark, (also comes in Peacock light) is a mixture of wool and silk, adding sheen to the feather design- very much like an actual peacock feather.

Anthropolgie has a table top collection of Peacock inspired plateware. I have scene this in person and they are very chic! One image I included the whole set, the second shows you a close up of one of the designs.

Trina Turk, one of my favorite fashion designers, has partnered with Schumacher for an indoor/outdoor fabric line which debuted in March 2009. Her fabrics are so bright and colorful! This is her "Peacock" fabric coming in three different colorways. This fabric is only available "To the Trade" through an interior design professional.

Orange in Los Angeles available through 1st.dibs, has a vintage brass peacock lamp dating from the 1960's. This lamp would be such a fabulous accent piece in an entry on a console.

Even Pottery Barn has jumped on the band wagon. The bedding line, Bettina, is rich and sophisticated. The first time I saw this bedding I even considered it momentarily for my own personal bedroom.

Last but not least, take a look at this modernized graphic letterpress greeting card "Peacock" by Kamal. For those of you that don't participate in the art of personalizing cards anymore, perhaps you should start, just so you can brighten some one's day with this visual splendor!

Take a look around, much of what we see in the design world is a reinvention of what already has been done. Trends come and go, but when trends are related to an element of nature, they will never fully disappear..... take a risk, be bold and beautiful, like the outrageous peacock!

RSS Feed: Let's first start with what "RSS" means. RSS stands for "Real Simple Syndication." RSS feeds allow for blog content to be more widely spread and reach farther audiences- that's great for me! What exactly that means, I'm not sure, but it sounds marvelous right? I need to do a lot more research on this subject. However, why this is great for you, especially if you look at multiple blogs a day, is that a subscription to a RSS feed gives you a way to manage all the sites that peak your interest showing you the most up to date posts without even having to visit the site.

Antique Shop Extravaganza

Billy's Antiques & Props- 76 East Houston, NYC

"Step right up everyone and see the strangest and most unique street antique shop that exists in New York City." I have been walking past Billy's Antiques & Props since I moved to the East Village three weeks ago. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was a traveling circus. With it's large green tent surrounded by a chain link fence, signage posted between two vintage street lamps, and furniture lining the sidewalk, you almost expect people to be walking around in costume- perhaps the two headed lady or maybe, if I'm lucky, the ring leader!

This place was created in 1986, when according to it's website, the East Village was not often visited "except for the adventurous. As the sun would set on East Houston, the junkies and alcoholics would lurk around like zombies, asking for handouts." The East Village is nothing like that now- mostly surrounded by young professionals and NYU students. This shop is a little treasure in downtown. There are so many interesting and fabulous finds and unbelievable prices! So often, these type of random antique shops mark their merchandise up so much it is hard to make a justification for the purchase. There were so many things I wanted, as my imagination was trying to figure out with each piece how I could "glam it up." Thankfully, I was able to take two pictures of items that I absolutely LOVE before my camera died.

Both of these lights were working and in near perfect condition. The chandelier was $200 and the lantern below was $120. I unfortunately have no where to put them, but they are wonderful! They could remain as is- or be painted some interesting color, with or without little shades.

Going through my "inspiration" file of ripped out images from magazines, I found an image of a antique lantern similar in style to the above fixture, but much more detailed that retailed for $10,450!!!!! I tried to find it on the Internet, but alas, it must have sold.

The reason why these specific fixtures caught my attention is due to the fact that one of my favorite little dining areas was featured in the Instyle March 2008 issue showing off Nicky Hilton's home in Los Angeles. Take a look at the Beverly Hills Hotel inspired dining room and pay close attention to the light fixture. Different, but similar in flavor and style!

Isn't this room so fun and glamorous even with the iron patio furniture acting as interior furniture!?! Very much reminiscent of the golden era of Hollywood! The Banana Leaf Wallpaper is still available today at Designerwallcoverings.com. I intend on designing a room one day with this wallpaper- either for someone else, or perhaps my own garden and patio room. Yes, that's right. You heard me. I will have a garden room one day!

So for any of you New Yorkers who want some great unique pieces at reasonable prices and in fairly good condition, check out Billy's Antiques & Props. The staff is really helpful! You never know what you will find. Perhaps like me, it will be finding a piece like one I never dreamed I could afford!

Let the painting begin- Goodbye Yellow, Hello Hazy Blue

As you can see in the previous posting, my room is currently painted yellow- a bright yellow that is between a pastel and primary yellow. I strongly dislike it- for a bedroom that it. And my slight rant right now does not mean every yellow. There are many gorgeous and rich golden yellow colors. The reason being is that it hurts my eyes. I think I may be more sensitive to it than others. When I wake up and look at the walls, especially when it is bright outside, it is very difficult to focus. I know that may sound dramatic, but let me give you a brief description why. This is important for all you parents; especially those getting ready to do a nursery.

Yes, yellow is a neutral and happy color which is obviously why it is so popular. Yellow reflects the most light of any color and therefore, it is can cause irritation, headaches, and the straining of one's eyes. I remember in design school my color instructor said studies had discovered that babies were more likely to cry in a yellow room versus any other color. Hey mom, perhaps that why I cried so much? Oops....now they tell her. Since we're on the subject, go with neutrals (that includes beiges and grays,) blues and greens. They are very suitable and calming for the babies. Also, pinks and reds are great too, however, they too, are loud and energetic so should be used in moderation as accents.

I have decided to paint my room Benjamin Moore's Hazy Blue in a high gloss finish. There is a color similar to it in my bedding. However, the main key to choosing a paint is holding it up to the walls against the main item, that being my bedding, and making sure that it works in different types of lighting at different times of the day. The color is not a pure aqua, but rather more of a dusty aqua- a bit muted. Yes, it may seem dark for some because my room is so small, and believe me, it has been a concern. But due to the high gloss finish, it will reflect light. High gloss paint should usually only be used on walls that have no imperfections, meaning it should not be used on my walls, because there are spackling marks everywhere! But..... I am going to take my chances. I intend on having a lot of decor on the walls, so hopefully it won't be a problem. But hey.... remember how I said in my earlier posts about the trials and tribulations of design? Well, here is one. I am going to take a chance!

Well, I am off to work now, but wanted to share my decision with you today. I am going to buy a scanner today. There are so many things I want to show you; for instance, the nurseries mentioned above and sketches and inspirations photos am using for my own design purposes.

Open door policy to my bedroom

So, I guess I should preface this entry with the fact that I have been apprehensive to even make this post and the pictures that are to be included. As a designer, one tries to portray themselves as all-knowing and without fault when it comes to their design practice. However, the truth is, we, that is "designers" and creative minds alike, try multiple things to satisfy our interior desires until we finally get it right. And even then, we may live with it for a short time, hate it, and start new. Or even worse, we realized we made a mistake. Much like when you failed to buy the pair of shoes you loved, but said you would think about it. You go back to buy them and they are no where to be found....and you can't seem to get them out of your mind.... days, weeks, months.... We have all been there!

Well, I have decided to let you in on my trials and triumphs when it comes to my design process. The first project will be my personal bedroom here in the East Village in New York City. I'll take you through the tour of my room as-is right now. Keep in mind- I moved to NYC without any furniture. These are things I am accumulating one-day-at-a-time!

Here goes:

I am standing on my desk to get this shot because my room is so small. 10x12- actually, that's not too bad for NYC standards! I bought the bed, nightstand, floor lamp, desk and small filling cabinet (shown in the pictures below) from the guy I rented from at Columbus Circle. I bought all of that for $200.00 and no moving needed to be done! Not my first choice of furnishings, but convenient none the less. The bedding, though to some may seem loud in terms of color, makes me so happy. I contemplated this purchase for almost 4 months. I feel like it reflects my personality- crazy, fun, colorful, and somewhat misunderstood by many! I bought it at Anthropoligie. The quilt and euro shams are from the Bella Collection and the standard shams are from the Iris collection. I didn't want to do it all from the same collection because it looks to matchy-match. It has somewhat of a country feel to it because of the fabric and quilting, so I am going to look for a silk Ikat fabric in the garment district to make a pillow or two for more formal accents to the bedding. I am on a desperate search for a headboard. Think I may have found one- I'll keep you posted (literally!) The whole look of this bedroom was formed from the bedding. This room will have an ecclectic look of french bohemian aka Moulin Rouge-esque, meets Great Expectations (the movie,) meets contemporary lines and ethnic flair!

This nightand is horrible. I hate the color and the height, but it will do for now. What I really want to do is find two small nightstands with doors, paint them black and hopefully be able to put antique mirror in the doors. I want them to go on either side of the bed with matching lamps. The lamp on my nightstand was purchased at TJ Maxx. I love the lines of the base, but the shade is atrocious with a blue and white flocked floral damask print. It was just a good purchase for $30. I know I'll use it elsewhere and hopefully I can find a nice shade that works.

A little note about NYC: I had to store this at TJ Maxx for a week until I could bring it home somehow. As a transplant, you forget that you can't just put something in your car. Alot of places have delivery, but it adds up. That is one reason why this city is so expensive. $5 delivery from Trader Joes +tip, $15 delivery from Bed Bath and Beyond, $7 dollar cab ride from TJ Maxx..... the list goes on and on.

The little table was an important find. I have that giant pink jewelry box from Hold Everything (which unfortunately went out of business a couple years ago,) and needed something for it to sit on. I also found this table at TJ Maxx. I paid $59 for it. I like the lines, perfect size, and the fact it has a drawer and shelf for storage. Living in NY, I have really had to become storage conscious.
I envision this table in a red paint, reminiscent of the old chinese red laquer pieces, and a really unique and large piece of hardware for the drawer pull.

I am so embarrassed about the fact I am plastering this messy pic on the net, but what can I say? I am still moving/ designing/ figuring out where to put everything! Like I said before, I bought the desk from one of my subletors. It does not work in the room, but for right now it will have to..... I have something very specific in my mind, and will keep searching craigslist for the right piece. Above the desk will be shelving.... still contemplating the design of it though.
I love this dresser! I needed a tall and skinny piece that fit in this specific space and saw this on craigslist. It comes across in the picture as cream, but in reality it is fairly yellow with gold leaf paint accents. But surprisingly, it works. I am not a huge fan of the hardware (very dated,) but "that'll do" for right now (That's a Babe reference for any of you who didn't catch that. Gosh- I don't know if I have ever quote Babe!) So many other things to focus on. And hardware can get pricy..... so we'll see. I may eventually paint it, but it does look nice with the yellow in my bedding. I bought this from craigslist for $115. Great condition- and they delivered it up to my 5-floor walkup!!!!!

I have two windows in my bedroom which I LOVE!!!!!! I get so much light and my windows look onto the center of the buldings where there are trees and it really is just a pleasant view. I am looking forward to doing something fun with the widow treatments. I envision one panel draperies on a rod pulled to either side of the widows. My bedroom window is directly across from a yoga studio, so everday I see the people practicing yoga, and I can't even imagine what they see me doing!
This little piece will always hold a special place in my heart. I bought this at a flea market aka junk market the first morning I woke up in my new East Village apartment. I was out for a walk early sunday morning and stepped into a parking lot where older ukranians, many of which had cigarettes hanging out of their mouth, were selling any and everything. I bought this lantern for $10. I was told it worked, and when I plugged it into the wall, a wire was exposed and it electricuted me and sparks started flying out of the socket! AHHHHH!!!!! I was flipping out! My hand had black burns on it for a day or so and I was definitely shaking for a couple hours- and not because of fear, but electric currents still flowing through my body! I am not sure what I will do with this piece. I'll for sure take the amber glass out (save it for something else) and probably spray paint it a bold color. Whether or not I'll rewire it, is another story.

This is my first official design post. The next thing on the agenda is paint! Paint color verdict - posted tomorrow!!!!

Big Drop Event- I got my pics on the net! Looks like I'm coming up!

Last week, I was helping out at a shopping event that Big Drop hosted for Dress for Success. A percentage of the proceeds went to the charity. There were some photographers there and I got my picture on a couple of websites. Since I am so new to this scene, I thought it was really fun!!!

First, a little about me- Miss Amy Davis

Good Morning everyone. Actually at this point, everyone might just be my mom. Hi Mom! There might be a few others that I have told with a reluctant grin, letting them know I finally started my blog.....And hello to the rest of you four!

For those of you who don't know me..... HI!!!!!

Amy Davis (1979 - )

I thought about going right into my first design post, but then realized, there might actually be people who wonder who I am, why I live in New York, and what I am doing here. Let me be the first to say, "My name is Amy Davis. I grew up in sunny southern California all my life, and moved to New York City on February 11th, 2009- 6 days before my 30th birthday." People ask me what I did for my birthday. "Anything special?" "Ummmm, yeah. I moved to New York."

My sister and I at my 30th birthday party she hosted for me at Lolita Bar in the Lower East Side. I had about 30 people show up. Some friends new and old and a really fabulous night!

And now onto my brief history:

I went to school for marketing at San Diego State University. I lived across from the beach on Mission Boulevard- a little peace of heaven on earth. After graduation, I moved up to Pasadena, California to work for my family's lumber company, while I went to the interior design program at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. You've never met a girl who knows more about lumber and wears 5" heals! Going to FIDM made me realize how important it is to study something you really enjoy. I truly loved going to class everyday. While at school, I met the talented celebrity event designer, Diann Valentine, and started working as her assistant on events, weddings, and interior projects. I eventually did a television pilot with her for a wedding reality show. What an experience that was! She is actually on the new TNT show, Wedding Day... Check it out!

Though I always had a strong passion for events, I knew I needed to get into the interior design world. After all, I did go to school for it! One thing led to another and I met a woman, who I proudly call my good friend, and started to work for her. She, too, went to FIDM. Here's a little lesson- NETWORK everyone! You never know who you are going to meet. I was her "project manager" for huge international projects. I even got to travel to London, Paris, and Bali. I received so much training and the travel wasn't bad either! I was truly blessed!

Now let me give you the dirt on why I came here to New York. Ever since I can remember, I knew I was bound for the city life- New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston.... I just wanted to be where there was endless excitement, fashion, design, and people, people, people. But, as life happens, things always came up and before I knew it, years had passed. Excuses like, "I have a good job, I have a boyfriend, I don't want to leave the weather, I may be too old for that life, I'll miss my family, this is good enough for right now, maybe later, do I really want to live in a shoebox?" But it was always in the back of my mind..... and weighing me down with regret, more often than not.

So....... after a difficult break up with someone I had spent years of my life with, as well as some dating disasters that followed, I decided to quit my job and move to New York! Yippee!!!!!!! I gave notice on my apartment and when it came down to finally moving, I CHICKENED OUT. Can you believe it? And again, I came up with all the aforementioned excuses (sans the boyfriend and job, of course) and was now in limbo. Thanks to my grandfather and his vacant house, I moved to San Clemente, California, where I spent 10 months living one block from the beach. I took a hiatus from design and started working at Nordstrom. I did a few freelance design jobs here and there, but primarily worked at Nordstrom. I am sure I'll go back one day and perhaps settle in Orange County permanently. Living at the beach is really a wonderful life. But I am not ready for that yet!

Though I LOVED living so close to the beach, I still thought about New York daily, but I never really talked about it with anyone. I was tired of being the girl that cried wolf. Then, on New Years Eve, I was sick with a cold and laying in bed. I remember I was watching "Love Actually" and even though I was sick, I was still drinking champagne. I refused to be at home on New Year's Eve and sober!!! But I had a moment of realization and it became clear to me that I had to move to Manhattan or I would regret it for the rest of my life. I didn't want to regret not doing things anymore. So.... I made the decision. Three weeks later, a friend of a friend was going to travel for two months and needed someone to take over the lease for that time. It worked out perfectly. From the moment I made my decision to my arrival in Manhattan, it was 6 weeks. My sister and best friend from college both live in New York, and they met me at my apartment that night. I finally took a leap and the net appeared. I was safe!

Living here has been an absolute blast and the experience of a lifetime. Meeting new people, traveling on the subway, food and entertainment, city life, staying up all night, a Britney Spears concert and so much more. Check out the pics below of two wonderful memories of mine in this city.

This picture was taken by me on a rooftop at sunrise less than two weeks after my arrival and two days before my first snow storm. Needless to say, it was FA-REEEEZING! But definitely worth it!

My sister wanted to see Britney Spears for her birthday so we got great seats and after the concert we decided to put all our Britney gear on and head back into the city and show up at another birthday party. I am sure we looked like freaks in our B-Spears shirts and masquerade masks, but it was soooooo fun!

But with all the fun, there has also been some difficult times- emotionally I should say. It has, at times, been really hard. The biggest point of contention is my living situation. I moved here in February and lived in East Williamsburg for six weeks, then moved to Columbus Circle across the street from Central Park for 2-1/2 months, and now just moved to the East Village. It has been hard settling down. And now, though I LOVE the location, I live with roommates.... Something I haven't done in 8 years. Also, my dog, Penny, is still at home with my mother. I decided to leave her at home until I was able to provide a comfortable place for her to live here in the city. I miss her so much, but thank goodness my cat Chloe is here with me! The job market is not so great here in New York, but I am actively looking for an opportunity that will allow me to live on my own, even in a borough, and bring Penny out here! Currently, I work at a high-end fashion boutique in SOHO, Big Drop, where I have the occasional celebrity customer. I have met some really great friends there, and for that, I am very thankful!

This is my cat Chloe..... Been a little beacon of support here in the city. I know she misses the great outdoors in California. She looks a bit viscous here, but she is actually only meowing to me. Caught in the action!

This is the little apple of my eye, Penny. I miss her so much. How could you not? Look at that precious face. She'll be joining me as soon as possible! This picture was taken underneath the covers... so cute.

Putting the above complaints aside, I have never regretted my move. Don't get me wrong, there were times where I was severely homesick, especially during my first snow blizzard, and thought about coming home, but thank goodness for my friends and family who slapped me back into place! They know how much this move meant to me and they weren't about to let me come home just because it got a little hard! Thanks guys!

This was taken when I woke up and opened the draperies to my apartment. I was obviously going to be bound inside since I did not own snow boots and I just lost the other hand to my only pair of gloves! Pretty though, right?

I just wanted to share with you my little history, and for those of you that know me, this could have gone on for days. I am notorious for telling stories that never end! There are just so many details I think are important...but no reason to bore you with them. Perhaps this little story will give the umph to someone who's made a lot of excuses for not pursuing their dreams. If so, don't let the moment pass anymore.

This has been the experience of a lifetime and I am so looking forward to what each day brings!
